Sribhumi witnesses massive rally of Assam Jatiya Parishad

AJP will field candidates in Barak in 2026

DD TIMES Sribhumi, 26 November: A massive public meeting of the Assam Jatiya Parishad was held today at Nilam Bazar in Sribhumi district. The rally was organised by the party’s Sribhumi district committee, with party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi attending as the chief guest.

Party vice presidents Shamsher Singh and Ramendra Malla Bujarbaruah, secretaries Raju Phukan, Chittaranjan Basumatary, Ziaur Rahman, Amitabh Barthakur, Uddipjyoti Gogoi, joint secretary Hemanta Kumar Haloi and party youth wing secretary Saiful Islam, along with several other central leaders, took part in the meeting. The event was presided over by the party’s Sribhumi district president Syed Shakilur Rahman.

It is noteworthy that the BJP has a strong base in the Barak Valley, where the ‘Jatiyatabadi’ regional party Assam Jatiya Parishad had so far been unable to build a solid organisational footing.

However, by drawing a crowd of more than five thousand people to the Vivekananda High School playground at Nilam Bazar, today’s rally is being viewed as a demonstration of the party’s growing organisational strength in the Barak Valley.

Before the public meeting, Lurinjyoti Gogoi and other party leaders visited the house on Settlement Road in Karimganj town where celebrated artist Zubeen Garg had spent part of his childhood, paid homage there, and demanded the construction of a memorial at the site as a step towards preserving the memory of the cultural icon.

They also visited the immersion ghat along the India–Bangladesh border to observe the open riverine international boundary. The party president then proceeded to the Kachaghanti temple in Karimganj town and offered prayers. After this, around five hundred party workers on motorcycles escorted the central leaders from Sribhumi town to the rally venue.

At the beginning of the meeting, party secretary and spokesperson Ziaur Rahman delivered a speech explaining the context in which the party was formed, as well as its aims, principles and ideology. This was followed by a detailed address by party president Lurinjyoti Gogoi.

In his speech, Lurinjyoti Gogoi said that because of the government’s divisive policies, the people of the Barak Valley have long felt somewhat isolated in comparison to the Brahmaputra Valley, creating a psychological divide between the two regions within the same state. He stated that removing this divide is one of the principal goals of the Assam Jatiya Parishad.

He further said that despite the Barak Valley giving relatively more votes to the BJP, the BJP government has committed the greatest injustices against the people of Barak. According to Gogoi, by reducing the number of constituencies in the Barak Valley from 15 to 13, the BJP has weakened the region’s political representation.

Gogoi alleged that under the patronage of two ministers from the Barak Valley, Dispur has played a role in promoting illegal syndicate markets dealing in various commodities across the three districts of Barak. He added that people have the right to know who in Dispur is receiving a share of the money generated by these syndicates.

He also criticised the government and the police for failing to stop the free flow, supply and trade of drugs in the Barak Valley, and asserted that the public can clearly understand who is backing these activities from behind the scenes.

At the same time, Lurinjyoti Gogoi announced that in the 2026 elections the Assam Jatiya Parishad will field its own candidates in the Barak Valley, along with other districts of Assam.
