Guwahati, September 3:
From today, the Bhullung-Buthur International Theatre Festival 2025 has commenced at the Sri Sri Madhavdev International Auditorium, Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra, Guwahati, featuring a rich collection of plays from both India and abroad.

The prestigious Guwahati-based theatre group “Aaak-e Creative Line”, under the leadership of Festival Director Dr. Mrinal Jyoti Goswami, has successfully organised this theatre festival for the last two years. This year too, the group is hosting the festival for the third time, from September 3 to September 7, 2025.
At the inaugural ceremony on the evening of September 3, the Chief Guest was Mr. Jinyoung Youn, Chair of the International Relations Committee of the Korea Theatre Association, who formally inaugurated the festival. The event was conducted by Dr. Manabendra Sharma and  Oinau Jengrai and the welcome address was delivered by festival secretary Anupam Saikia.

On this occasion, the Chief Guest also released Dr. Goswami’s essay collection “Aesthetics of Theatre – A Spectator’s Perspective”, along with two journals and the commemorative souvenir of the festival, followed by an address. Dr. Goswami also delivered a speech. The festival’s advisor and retired officer of All India Radio Guwahati, Tapan Dutta, was also present.

One of the highlights of the festival this year is its collaboration with the world-famous Colombo International Theatre Festival (CITF), organized by Interact Art, a Sri Lankan theatre body. Through mutual partnership and cultural exchange, both CITF and the Guwahati-based Bhullung-Buthur International Theatre Festival (BBITF) are being held as parallel international theatre festivals.

Alongside daily evening performances by theatre groups from India and abroad, the day sessions of BBITF 2025 will feature a Physical Theatre Workshop, discussion forums, and an environmental sensitivity workshop organized in association with Aranyak, a leading environmental organization of Assam.

This year, a total of 10 theatre groups from 6 different countries – Sri Lanka, South Korea, Croatia, Tunisia, Romania, and India – will perform at the festival.

On September 3, the opening performances included “The Girl Who Rode a Bicycle” by Surya, Guwahati and Romania’s “Not Me.”.

On September 4, South Korea’s play “After” will be staged.

On September 5, Sri Lanka will present “A Journey of Despair” and “It’s Not Me, Someone Else”, while Croatia stages “Palunko’s Wife.”

On September 6, Tunisia’s “The Immigrants” will be performed.

On September 7, Sri Lanka will present “Dummy” and “Unseen,” followed by India’s Aak-e Creative Line staging “Metamorphosis of Mitrachi Goshta.”

All performances will begin at 6:30 PM each evening. Workshops in physical theatre, conducted by visiting international artists, are also part of the programme.

On the closing evening of September 7, apart from the plays, the audience will witness a Yoga presentation directed by Dr. Hridayananda Tamuli Phukan, followed by a musical programme titled “The Fivefold Melody of Emotions”, managed by Arup Jyoti Patgiri – bringing the festival to a vibrant conclusion.
