Constitution Day Celebrated at Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya

DD TIMES Guwahati, 28 Nov: The Department of Juridical Studies of Mahapurusha Srimanta Sankaradeva Viswavidyalaya, Guwahati Unit, celebrated the Constitution Day on 26th November. The event was graced by the Hon’ble Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan, Former Judge of Gauhati High Court, as the Chief Guest.


The program began with an opening speech by Dr. Divakar Sharma, Assistant Professor of the Department, followed by the students performing Vande Mataram. Dr. Priti Rupa Saikia, Head of the dept. Delivered the welcome address, highlighting the importance of constitutional values such as equality and justice. She emphasized that the Constitution is not just a legal document but a guiding principle for the nation. Prof. Stuti Deka, Dean, Faculty of Law, provided a detailed account of the Constitution’s framing and the role of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, the architect of the Indian Constitution. She explained the significance of celebrating Constitution Day, which was previously known as National Law Day.


Hon’ble Justice Rumi Kumari Phukan delivered an insightful speech on the topic “Role of Judiciary as the Guardian of Constitution.” She highlighted the Supreme Court’s role in preserving democracy, judicial review, and protecting fundamental rights. She cited landmark cases such as Kesavananda Bharati V. State of Kerala and Maneka Gandhi v. Union of India, emphasizing the Constitution as a living document.
Mrinal Kumar Gogoi, Assistant Registrar, MSSV, enlightened with an informative speech on the Constitution of India. The event concluded with a deep understanding of the Constitution’s significance and its role in shaping the nation’s future. Dr. Susmita Gope, Assistant Professor of the dept. offered the vote of Thanks.
