Bharatiya Janata Party Pays Tribute to Bharat Ratna Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 14th Death Anniversary


DD TIMES Guwahati, November 5, 2025: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today paid heartfelt tributes to world renowned singer Bharat Ratna Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika on his 14th death anniversary through a series of commemorative programs held across Assam.

The tribute events were organized in 39 organizational districts and 433 mandals, including the state BJP headquarters at Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, Guwahati, where the party’s state president and MP from Darrang–Udalguri, Shri Dilip Saikia, led the homage ceremony.

During the solemn occasion, party leaders, workers, and admirers of the legendary artist gathered to pay their respects and celebrate his timeless legacy while singing the song of eternal spirit “Manuhe Manuhor Babe.

Shri Dilip Saikia reiterated Bharatiya Janata Party’s commitment to preserving and promoting the cultural legacy of the great son of Assam whose voice continues to unite the world even today. Describing Dr. Hazarika as a “radiant star in the cultural universe of Assam and India,” he recalled Dr Bhupoen Hazarika’s invaluable contributions as a singer, composer, poet, and humanitarian who dedicated his art to unity and social consciousness. The party noted with pride that the BJP-led Government of India posthumously conferred the Bharat Ratna on Dr. Hazarika, immortalizing his creative genius and making the people of Assam immensely proud.

Simultaneously, as this is also the 100th birth anniversary year of Sudhakantha, the Government of Assam has been observing a year-long series of cultural and commemorative programs that began on September 8, 2025. Our Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma led the state-level tribute at Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Samannay Kshetra situated in Jalukbari, accompanied by Culture Minister Shri Bimal Bora, senior officials of the state’s cultural department, and members of Dr. Hazarika’s family, his brother Shri Samar Hazarika and sisters Smt. Stuti Patel and Smt. Shobha Hazarika.

Paying his deepest respects, the Chief Minister announced a series of forthcoming programs as part of the year-long centenary celebrations.

He also shared that it has been decided that on the upcoming Martyrs’ Day on December 10, Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika’s timeless song “Swahid Pranamo Tomak” (“Salutations to You, O Martyr”) will be performed.

In the same spirit, the Government of Assam has already initiated the necessary steps to install a 100-foot-tall statue of the humanitarian artist at the zero point of the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Setu (Dhola–Sadiya Bridge), one of the largest bridges in India as a mark of eternal tribute to the cultural icon.


Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal paid his deep tribute on the death anniversary of Bharat Ratna Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, respectfully recalling the vast contributions and works of Sudhakantha. Our Union Home Minister Amit Shah, through social media, also offered his heartfelt tribute to the revered artist on his sacred death anniversary and stated that the memory of Dr. Bhupen Hazarika will continue to inspire our countrymen for generation to generation.


It is noteworthy that on September 13, during the centenary celebrations of the people’s beloved Sudhakantha Dr. Bhupen Hazarika, Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a ₹100 commemorative coin in memory of Dr. Hazarika, and also released a book authored by eminent storyteller Anuradha Sharma Pujari about the life of the maestro.


Significantly, during the same event, the Prime Minister also launched the translated version of the book into 22 Indian languages.
