Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi participates in the ‘Raijor Podulit Raijor Congress’ programme in Golaghat
“The people of Assam are self-respecting; they want to be partners, not mere beneficiaries”

DD TIMES Guwahati, January 9: As part of the ‘Raijor Podulit Raijor Congress’ programme, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Gaurav Gogoi today held interactions with representatives of various organisations and eminent personalities in Golaghat.
He was accompanied at the programme by All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and APCC co-in-charge Bikash Upadhyay, and APCC working president Roselina Tirkey.
Speaking to journalists at the conclusion of the programme, Gogoi said that the people are increasingly dissatisfied with the present government’s divisive and patronage-driven policies.
He stated that this sentiment clearly emerged during interactions with the public. “The people of Assam have begun to think about a new Assam today—an Assam where everyone can live together in harmony,” he said.
Gogoi further remarked that the present BJP government views people only as beneficiaries. “The people of Assam are self-respecting. They do not want to remain beneficiaries; they want to be partners,” he said.
He added that while the poor will and must receive welfare benefits—as they did during previous Congress governments and will continue to do so under future Congress governments—people also aspire to be hardworking and self-reliant.
However, he alleged that the current government has failed to create such opportunities.
He said the BJP government lacks any concrete plan to make the people of Assam self-reliant. “The government’s objective is to run coal syndicates, sand syndicates, and to grab the land of poor people,” Gogoi alleged.
He further accused that families of BJP ministers and MLAs have benefited the most from the Basundhara scheme, while the poor have yet to receive the benefits they are entitled to. Therefore, he said, the people are seeking the downfall of what he termed an arrogant BJP government.
Responding to questions from the media regarding opposition unity, Gogoi categorically stated that the opposition will contest the forthcoming elections in unity. “The process of deciding how many seats each party will contest will follow a structured procedure.
Every opposition party is aware of this. Everyone knows that the people are watching us, evaluating whether our actions are right or wrong. The people want an alliance, and they are closely observing whether we move one step forward or two steps backward on this issue. Ultimately, we will all have to accept the mandate of the people. Therefore, I am confident that our alliance is 100 per cent certain,” he said.
He further explained that the number of seats each party will contest will be decided first, followed by decisions on which party will contest from which constituency.
Meanwhile, commenting before national media on the video conference episode involving BJP state president Dilip Saikia, Gogoi said that based on reports published in the media, the Election Commission should have initiated a suo motu investigation.
“However, the Election Commission is silent today,” he said, questioning whether the Election Commission of India has become a puppet in the hands of the BJP.
Gogoi added that if the Election Commission fails to take action even after complaints have been filed, it would clearly establish that the Commission is not neutral.
He described the reported statement made by the BJP state president during the video conference—about deleting the names of those who did not vote for the BJP from the electoral rolls—as extremely dangerous for the country’s democracy.
